Keeping class memories alive

We have found a treasure trove of old Cedar yearbooks from the school archives. These are extremely precious as they document the long, long way Cedar and Cedarians have come since the school was founded. The alumni was graciously given permission by the school to reproduce the class photos in these yearbooks (remember how we were herded under the hot sun to sit on chairs or stand on canteen benches to have our class photo taken every year?) for our alumni members and Cedarians graduates.

These old photos will be scanned in and mounted on hardboard with a photo stand. The background is taken from a collection of sketches of the old school - another precious resource because the architecture of the school today is not the same as before! Of course, you - and your classmates - don't look the same today too!

And so, 30 years later

After leaving Cedar, we did not see each other until July 22, 2011. More than three decades later, there she was standing in the canteen watching me walk towards her (not intentionally, but I was heading in her direction anyway) and waiting to see whether I would recognise her. I stopped and for all of five seconds, I looked and then "ting!", lightbulb moment. G... H...! I yelled. S.. Y..! she screamed in returned. We high-fived several times, so amazed were we of our discovery of each other again and in Cedar. We whooped and talked so loudly - like vegetable sellers, but this was a reunion like no other. A former classmate who I remembered for her distinctive way of teasing you, did that vanishing act like every school girl in Singapore after the "O" levels. We pursued our own destinies until our paths miraculously crossed again - more than 30 years later.

The moral of this rather long-winded story? If you are seeking old, dear, Cedar classmates, going back to school is one of the best ways to do so. Ask A... who, somehow, managed to find more than 30 friends of hers who all attended the dinner held at the official opening of Cedar school on July 22, 2011. Yes, they whooped, hugged each other and talked loudly too. Familiar reunion scenes.

Of course, GH and I exchanged mobile numbers and promised to see each other again - there is so much catching up to do. And, maybe, the school may provide yet another great excuse for a party and a reunion! I hope the principal reads this!

So, are you coming to dinner? The school and alumni are organising a big dinner in July and are inviting students, parents, alumni members and their friends to this most important occasion of the year - the official opening of Cedar Girls Secondary School after the completion of extensive renovations more than a year ago.

It will be a pretty classy affair. You will be served a four-course, halal, Western dinner (or vegetarian, if that's what you prefer). Dust off your smart togs and come, join in the fun in new, smart surroundings. If you've not been back to Cedar an era ago, take this opportunity to have a look. Email us if you are keen to party!

So, who says we can't have another dinner? Rhetorical question, of course. We always have makans in Singapore! Preparations are swinging merrily along behind the scene and one that we (well, two alumni committee members, that is) enjoyed recently was food tasting. We were invited to take part by the school and it was so enjoyable. We ate and bit the hand (the caterer's hand, that is) that fed us by being picky, picky, picky. After all, there are some 500 guests who will be eating the food we picked and we really want them to leave with happy stomachs. More news coming up on this event.

We have some new faces in our executive committee 2010-2011! We warmly welcome Ann Leong, Tan Hsueh Mei, Mabel Yap and Sharon Cheam and hope they will enjoy the experience of working with the rest of us.

The committee now comprises Ko Lee Meng (president), Berinderjeet Kaur (1st vice-president). Betty Tan (2nd vice-president), Sherry Alsagoff (Hon. Secretary), Tsang Sau Yin (Asst. Hon. Secreatary), Angeline Koh (Treasurer), Heng Tung Hwa (Asst. Treasurer) and committee members: Louise Lim, Sharon Cheam, Belinda Ting, Rina Tay, Tan Hsueh Mei, Dorothy Lim, Mabel Yap and Choo Lu Yun. Our Hon. Auditors are Chua Poh Suan and Ann Leong. Welcome aboard everybody and let's enjoy the ride!

The one big event to watch out for this year is the school's opening (or is it re-opening?) after the massive renovations it underwent. We will have more news on this July event for you soon! It's J.U.L.Y. folks!

THE last event of 2010

Oops! The beauty workshop was not the last alumni event of the year - it was second-last (well, the word "last" is there right?). Anyway, THE last event was Orientation Day on 23rd December. We were given a well-positioned table in the canteen to sell the Cedar towels.

Sales went very well and we had some lovely support from the students. See the cheerful pictures!

Okay, okay, so we have not posted for a few months. You probably thought this blog died. No, no, not really, life just has a way of getting into your face and updating this blog was, hmm, shall we say, put on the back burner. However, 2011 has come and before it's gone, we have to get in a few new posts of course!

Our last event for 2010 was a beauty workshop on the TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) way to beauty. For this, we had the experts on hand from Touche to give us a talk and hands-on demo of the guasa facial technique on 20th November. We were served a delicious lunch at the Guild House at Suntec and afterwards it was show time!

Feedback from the attendees was that they found the talk extremely interesting and almost everyone signed up for a trial facial since it was offered at a giveaway price! Touche also gave out complimentary vouchers and free wax hand treatment to all. See all pictures here.

Meeting after 45 years!

What a meeting! After more than 45 years, these ex-school mates from Cedar met up. A last-minute decision by Alice Kong to fly to Singapore from Hong Kong last December, enabled her to reunite with six of her former classmates: Catherine Chia, Patricia Goh, Cheng Choo, Mah Yok, Joyce Wong and Rosalind Ang. Except for the last gal, the rest are in these two pictures. Alice (left) and Catherine are in the top picture.

Homecoming 31st Dec 09

The morning was bright, beautiful and best of all - dry! On New Year's eve, we gathered on a hillock in Bidadari (is the place still called a cemetery now that all the graves are
gone?) for a ceremonious walk back to the old/new Cedar school. Some 1,000 of us - students, ex-students, teachers, alumni and SAC members - began the walk after several short speeches and a weak blare of the horn. It was more splutter, splutter when Mrs. Ou Yang pressed the button, and we had a good laugh. Then it was on, on, a 1.2 km walk for some, a one km walk for others depending on which route one chose. The idea was to meet at the gates of the school and together march in heading towards the hall. A welcoming committee of pom pom girls, drumming parents and two cheering lines of students made the event noisy, colourful and exciting! If you missed the walk, there are pictures here.

Orientation Day

Here we were, the five of us from the alumni committee trying to sell our towels to the incoming new Cedar students. Some harried parents avoided our eyes and stepped quickly out of the way when they saw one of us approaching. Others were really nice and when they heard that we were trying to raise funds for scholarships for needy students, they bought a towel or two without hesitation. Hard work and loads of perspiration on our part and we sold almost 150 towels in that few hours. Hooray! Next sales day will be 31st December, when the entire school, parents and ex-Cedarians will be participating in the school's homecoming. If you're joining in the fun, don't forget to visit our stall and do your bit for Cedar's needy students!

Dinner was a blast!

Did we have a blast! Dinner at the Orchard Hotel on 14th Nov 09 started off the same time as the APEC show and Orchard Road was a mess! Guests arrived late but still in good humour though MC for the night, Ser Lee, looked out of breath after battling the traffic. ('Cos she must not be late, yah). VIP guests were just as relaxed and that bode well for the rest of the evening. The ladies mixed, mingled and hugged old friends and took pictures with the retired teachers.

The gals were generous and the Cedar towels were bought up by the bags full, literally. The towels are to raised funds for scholarships for needy Cedar students.

Principal Mrs. Ou Yang brought us up to-date with Cedar's achievements, which were applauded, and there were oohs and aaahs at the pictures of the renovations. A wonderful harp performance and a belly-shaking dance by young Cedarian grads showed just how talented some of us are. Lucky draw prizes included a diamond pendant from Goldheart and a beach resort stay for two at the Kempinski Resort & Spa Sanya, Hainan Island.

Open House at Cedar

Well, looks like most of the furniture have gone in. The school is throwing an Open House on Saturday 28/11/09 and is inviting all Cedarian graduates to come and take a look at the completed renovations. Bound to impress is the new auditorium, the seminar rooms, the Alumni Hall (yep, we have one) and the running track. Times are 9 am to 2 pm. So, take a trip back. You won't recognise it!

It's almost time for dinner - the Cedarian Alumni dinner, that is, coming up this Nov 14th weekend. We hope you are all looking forward to this one special evening that you will spend with former classmates and your old teachers. If you have not booked your tickets yet, well, shall we say, there just a tiny bit of room left. Contact us!

By the way, the Cedar towels will be sold at this dinner. Funds raised will be for scholarships for deserving Cedar students, who may be facing financial difficulties. Do a kind deed this weekend and buy a towel!

It's almost finished!

The renovations at 1, Cedar Avenue that is. Representatives of the SAC and the alumni committee were invited to tour the almost completed school today. Classrooms and the hall are bigger; the domestic science classroom is impressive with shiny, stainless-steel cooking hobs; a two-story carpeted library, etc.. but let's have the pictures reveal some of the changes.

2009 is whizzing past and if you've been observing developments in Cedar, you will be glad to know that renovations at Cedar Avenue are entering its final stage and sometime towards end December, there will be a ceremonious March Back. Teachers and staff at Cedar are already putting their heads together to organise this home-coming event. Perhaps some of you "old" girls may want to join in. Details later so watch this space.

Cedar Towels

Do you have any souvenirs from your days in Cedar? Well, apart from the uniform and T-shirt and shorts, that is. We have come up with a very practical and useful souvenir for all Cedar gals - a sports towel with the words CEDAR on it. It's made up of 100% fluffy, soft, terry cotton. Measuring 36 cm (W) x 88 cm (L), it's small enough to stuff into your gym bag, but large enough to wipe yourself down after a hard workout. It's $10 each and comes in yellow and grey. (The pictures show both sides of the towel). These towels are to raised funds for scholarships for needy Cedar students.

You can buy the towels from the bookshop in Cedar school, or contact the alumni for orders. Reminder: the school is now at a temporary location at 3, Geylang Bahru Lane, while the the Cedar Avenue site is being renovated. From 2010, the school will be back at its original site at 1, Cedar Avenue.

Hello Cedarian Graduates!

Ladies, have we some exciting news for you! Before our annual 2007 AGM started, Cedar's principal Mrs. Ou-Yang Geok Cheng briefed us on school events to-date and what to expect in the near future.

First off - and the most exciting - there's that iconic bitumen track that we "lost" in November 1994, when Cedar moved to its present premises. This sense of something missing continues to be felt by many ex-Cedarians today, especially those who were privileged to have seen it in its glory days or ran on it.

Track and field events were so much a part of our lives then and this was reflected in the many years the B and C divisions won top positions in the secondary and junior college nationals. This humble running track bonded us strongly to the school and imbued in us an indomitable spirit that awed our peers! Its continued absence seems to be making itself felt. In year 2000, only the B division managed to keep the top spot. Is the school losing its running edge? Mrs. Ou-Yang hopes this dismal showing can be re-addressed with a new running track within the school grounds, just like before.

The school will be moving out of its present premises at end 2006 so that renovation works can begin next year. Plans are ongoing and the details are still being worked out but a running track is included and this, plus other "non-standard" facilities, will require fund raising on the part of the school and the alumni. We will keep you updated on this as events develop.

Another wonderful event that you may have missed out is the School Excellence Award 2006. This is one of the highest and most prestigious awards given out by the Ministry of Education in its Masterplan of Awards and brings Cedar on par with some of the best-known secondary schools in Singapore. This is something to shout about!

Where events in the alumni are concerned, we have a new committee in place for 2007-2008: Berinderjeet Kaur - Vice-president (picture left), Shariffah Alsagoff - Hon. Secretary, Tsang Sau Yin - Assistant Hon. Secretary, Betty Tan - Treasurer and committee members are Dolly Leong, Maureen Teo, Linda Seah, Tan Suan Hwee, Teo Ser Lee, Heng Tung Hwa, Judy Lim and Shanti Govindan. Our Hon. Auditors are Ngiam Siew Wei and Heng Tung Lan.

During her briefing, Mrs. Ou-Yang also expressed the hope that Cedar and the alumni will continue to cement their partnership by collaborating and supporting each other as much as possible. Towards this end, we are planning a number of fun and exciting events in the following months and I would like to appeal to all ex-Cedarians to join us and to help in any way you can. To quote a Chinese proverb: "When you drink the water, remember the spring".

Update on 50 Laps @ Cedar

Cedar students, teachers, parents and alumni members had a field day last Friday, 31st August. Literally. The event was 50 Laps @ Cedar, organised to raise funds for the school's upcoming renovations. The school ground was a buzz of noise and activity with students playing various games, selling food (and screeching out their wares) or getting ready to grab a flag from the runners on their final laps.
Every class ran at least one lap while the more stalwart runners managed to do more than that. A few teachers and a parent completed the 50 laps in about three hours and were greeted with the Cedar cheers (you know how ear-splitting these are!) and warm applause when they ran triumphantly into the courtyard.
Even the school maintenance staff cheerfully took part. What good sports!
Alas for the alumni, we only had six representatives: Devika, Shanti, Sherry, Dolly, Sau Yin and Linda. The fact that Friday was a working day possibly kept members away from this lively event.
President Louise came to support despite still recovering from her knee operation. A recently-bought "tongkat" gave her a new status!

The women's Mount Everest team is now climbing the Cho Oyu (8201 m) mountain in Tibet, the sixth highest mountain in the world. This will be their final expedition before their bid for Everest next year.

50 Laps @ Cedar

Note the date - 31st August 07. Fun and food galore at Cedar! A mini jog-athon around the school to raise funds to bring the beloved running track back to Cedar. This is among the other "non-standard" items the school will be having when it begins renovations next year.
The target is $600,000 and everyone connected to the school is invited to participate in 50 Laps including ex-Cedarians, pupils, staff, alumni, Cedar Connect and Home School Link (i.e. parents). Some 50 teams are to be formed and flag-off time is 6 am. (Do we hear groans?) But it's all for Cedar. You're not going to go home hungry either. There will be food stalls set up in the canteen to satisfy the beast in your belly. Fun and games will be ongoing in the courtyard and soccer field. So drop us an email quickly if you want to participate. Better still, form your own teams with former classmates and have more laughs that way.

Running Track Pledges

Having our own running track - again! That bitumen running track of Cedar represented the hard work of school staff, students and parents who gave their all to raise $250,000 for the laying of the 400-metre oval. A big amount in those days and without rich old girls to fall back on, the money was raised by holding fun fairs, walkathons and cinema shows. This is a source of pride among Cedarians. The track was officially opened in 1972 and since then, Cedar steadily built up its fierce reputation in track and field events through the 70s, 80s and 90s. More than one athlete from Cedar made it to the national and regional games. We “lost” that track in 1994 when the school moved to this present location. Today, on Cedar’s 50th birthday, it seems appropriate that everyone – school staff, students, graduates and parents – offers the school a birthday present by coming together once again for another major fundraising effort to bring the track back into the school. 50th Birthday Bash

It was a birthday bash to remember as Cedar celebrated its 50th anniversary with more than 500 party goers, including school staff, students, members of the School Advisory Committee, alumni members and Cedarian graduates from past years, including some from as far back as 1957. The school pulled out all the stops to entertain their guests including GOH Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education. Mr Tharman credited Cedar with its determination and continuing efforts to nurture leaders of character. The speeches were followed by a toast. Among the VIPs on stage were past principals Mrs. Niva Dutt, Mdm. Tan Chen Choo and Ms. Susan Leong.
Included in the night's programme was a fashion show where parents, teachers and alumni members sashayed down the "catwalk" to chosen themes. Ours was "You are so beautiful". Performances were also put on by the school's concert band and dance groups.

Graduates of Cedar Girls' Secondary School, who are currently working. If you are studying in a tertiary institution, you can join as a Youth member, which is free.

Why join?

The alumni serves as a platform to encourage the building of deeper ties and connection with Cedar school and "old" Cedarians.

Alumni functions offer networking opportunities with Cedarians who have left school and are now successful businesswomen, corporate leaders and careerists in various trades, professions and industries.

You can help play a part in shaping the future of Cedar. The alumni is a crucial body that plays a key role in being a sounding board for major school policies. These are not empty words. We have been consulted by the school on several occasions pertaining to important educational issues.

So do maintain your connection with your alma mater, play a bit part or a major role (it does not matter), and support us by joining as a member!

Alumni Book Prizes

The Cedarian Alumni Book Prizes are to honour three students who have been picked among all eligible students between Secondary two to four, who have demonstrated improvements in their ECAs, academic performance, community service and leadership potential. The Alumni feels that by honouring these students, we are formally recognising that each one represents the qualities that best examplifies a Cedarian.

That is: she has demonstated intelligence, leadership capability, community involvement and a determination to better her personal development in as many areas as she can manage - on top of her studies! A tall order, indeed, which is why these book prizes are special to the three who are picked the winners and are given out during one of the important events in the school calender - Speech Day.

We find that in trying to award the book prizes, it gets harder and harder to make a decision each year. Why? The girls give better and better performances in the areas we are looking at!

Everest Women!

To reach the highest peak in the world, Mount Everest, the Singapore Women’s Everest Team was formed in 7th July 2004. It will be the first, all-women climbing team in Singapore and South-East Asia to attempt this world-famous summit. In the 14-women team are three ex-Cedarians, from different graduating years.
The Cedarian Alumni website profiles the three courageous ladies, who are wonderful examples of the school motto.

Graduating class of 2000

While in Cedar:Javelin thrower, a debater and a peer support leader while in Cedar. Went on to National Junior College before completing her studies at the National Technological University.

The Cedar lessons:Cedar taught her perseverance. This has become her template in life especially when faced with arduous tasks.

Why climb Mt. Everest? I'm attempting Everest as a personal challenge and also to encourage others (male and female) to take up mountaineering as a sport.
What does your family and people close to you have to say about your attempt to climb THE mountain? My folks are obviously worried; they're always asking the WHY question... why do I have to pick such a dangerous sport, why can't I do something that requires less time. But at the end of the day, they're also the ones who wish me the best whenever I depart for a mountaineering trip.
What do you feel at this moment in time, after successfully climbing Mera Peak (Nepal) recently and still there are days of training ahead till 2008? Have you learned anything about yourself? When I was standing at the top of Mera, I did not think: YES! I DID IT, I'M SUCH A HERO! Instead, a still, small voice inside me thanked God that I had reached the top and that I didn't give up on the long arduous journey up. I am amazed at how much further I can push myself if I believe it can be done.

While in Cedar: A keen Girl Guider,and actively involved in the Girl Guides. Was with the 40th Company. Went on to Victoria Junior College and then the National University of Singapore.
The Cedar lessons: She has become a person who values perseverance and determination. The school’s excellent academic support has given her a sturdy foundation to excel throughout her academic life.

Job today: Product specialist with Wyeth, a pharmaceuticals and health care products company.
Why climb Mt. Everest?: Mt. Everest is the epitome of mountaineering. To be able to summit it, or even to have a go at climbing it, says a lot about the endurance and determination I possess.

After some trekking and climbing experiences, I find that I yearn for something bigger and taller and nothing beats Everest. I can imagine the immense sense of accomplishment I would feel, should I be standing at the peak of Everest. I have a desire to try everything I can in my life and since this opportunity came along, I will not sit around and wonder what it would be like to climb Everest.
Have there been naysayers (people who say women can't do it) and if yes, how have you dealt with them? There are always such people. I let them rant and continue training hard; the results will speak for themselves. What does your family and people close to you have to say about your attempt to climb THE mountain? Most of them are quite impressed with the commitment I put into the team (i.e. the rigorous training) and also the endurance and determination it takes to climb this mountain.

Many have also asked interesting questions about mountaineering life since few have this kind of experience. What do you feel at this moment in time, after successfully climbing Mera Peak (Nepal) recently and still there are days of training ahead till 2008? Have you learned anything about yourself? I am pining for my next peak and hoping I will reach greater heights and encounter more challenges. I want to be exposed to the more technical aspects of climbing.

While in Cedar: An outstanding athlete; was also a House Captain, a member of the Literary, Debating and Dramatic Society, vice-chairman of the Art Club, a pupil librarian, and a class monitor. Set the “C” Division 800m record in 1976 that stood for more than 10 years. Went on to St. Andrew's Junior College, Institute of Education and College of Physical Education. Became a teacher. She is in the support team, looking after the Everest women.

The Cedar lessons: She treasures most the great moral support given by the principal, teachers and fellow students. Vividly remembers the euphoria that accompanied every victory and an equally euphoric support for defeat; the loud chants of “It’s OK. It’s alright. We still love you anyway.” Cedar continued to support her on the track, even though she wore her college colours! Job today: Mrs. Devika Tay aka homemaker, has three young children.

1. To encourage a life-long relationship between the Cedarian Alumni and Cedar Girls' Secondary School by:
1.1 Offering whatever assistance that may be required in the School's pursuit of excellence
1.2 Acting as a liaison centre between alumni members and present students and teachers of the School in order that the latter may benefit from the advice, experience, guidance and assistance of the members.
1.3 Preserving a historical account of the School and recording the achievements of its former students, teachers and principals.
2. To promote the common interests of and reunite ex-Cedarians by:
2.1 Promoting friendship, cooperation, goodwill and solidarity among alumni members through social, cultural, educational and recreational activities.
2.2 Extending the influence of the old students, teachers and others formerly associated with the School for the benefit of all.
2.3 Providing a platform for bonding and networking among members.
2.4 Fostering among members a spirit of pride, loyalty and love for the Alma Mater.
3. To encourage and instill in members and students an awareness of their role in the community by engaging in activities that will promote the interests and welfare of the School, the Alumni and the Community.
